Heath Township

Waste and Recycling

Curbside Recycling

Residents can participate in a curbside recycling program through the township. Recyclables are collected by Republic Services every 4th week (click here for calendar). When the regularly scheduled collection day falls on or after a holiday in that week, service will be provided one day later. Materials must be set out the night before collection. This service is for residential homes only.

To sign up for this valuable program please go online at allegancounty.org. Under the health tab, find recycling with a sign up link there. You can also contact Republic Customer Service at 877-698-7274 or call Allegan County Resource Recovery at 269-686-4559. (This service is funded by the $50 surcharge on the winter tax bill.)

The following recycling items can be comingled together: Plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, clear and colored glass, newspapers, paper, cardboard and magazines. Items must be clean! If your cart is not large enough to accommodate your recycling needs, remember that this material can be dropped off at the two other depot stations available(see below).

Household Hazardous Waste

Call the Allegan county Health Department at 269-673-5411 (3255 – 122nd Avenue, Suite 200, Allegan) if you have: household batteries, oil-based paints, cleaners, expired or unwanted medications, pesticides, solvents, compact fluorescent lights, automotive and other chemicals. Appointments for drop off are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays during regular business hours.

Mercury Thermometers

The Allegan County Health Department also accepts mercury thermometers for recycling and recommends that all area residents replace these dangerous instruments with safer digital devices. If mercury spills from a broken thermometer and is not carefully and thoroughly cleaned up, it will continue to evaporate, reaching potentially harmful levels in indoor air. Mercury thermometers may be dropped off at the Health Department any time during business hours; no appointment is required. Double wrap thermometers in plastic zip-lock bags for transport.

Unwanted Medications

These may now be dropped off at the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department during their lobby hours; however, they will accept pill form only. Any other forms please contact the Allegan County Health Department listed above.
